About Thomas J. Hayes

Thomas J. Hayes is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut. He is the director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Political Science. He also serves as director of the EcoHouse learning community. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Riverside in 2012.

Professor Hayes has a wide variety of research interests in the field of American politics on topics such as economic inequality, political representation, public opinion, political behavior, state politics, and public policy. He previously participated in the Fulbright program serving as U.S. Studies Chair at Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico during Spring 2019.  Professor Hayes is currently a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.

His co-authored book, Elite-led Mobilization and Gay Rights: Dispelling the Myth of Mass Opinion Backlash, is available for order with the University of Michigan Press or on Amazon.
